Comprised of 80 hand painted earthenware plates with 22 karat gold luster, FLEUR DE LIS was commissioned by a collector for their Louisiana home. With a specific color palette and a love for a particular aesthetic, this work references a swatch of wallpaper designed by Christopher Dresser in the late 1880s. Dresser was a British designer and design theorist, known as a pivotal figure in the Aesthetic Movement and industrialization of design. Much like other works I've re-presented by Dresser, FLEUR DE LIS deconstructs and reconstructs the pattern, asking the viewer to reconsider their understanding of the imagery, its relevance and history as well as question our understanding of the plate as painting.
